An Amazon ASIN is a 10-digit code that is assigned to every product sold through the site. It provides a unique alphanumeric code for tracking inventory.
As a new seller on Amazon, there are a lot of new industry terms being thrown your way. One that should be at the top of your priority list to understand is the ASIN.
What is an ASIN? How do you get one? Why is this such a critical element to being successful as a seller on Amazon?
Mayan took some time to walk you through these questions to make sure you have a strong start to selling on Amazon.
Let’s start with the basics. ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number.
An Amazon ASIN is a 10-digit code that is assigned to every product sold through the site. It provides a unique alphanumeric code for tracking inventory, among many other things.
Amazon also uses an ASIN to:
If you plan to sell your products on Amazon, it is necessary that you have an ASIN for them, which leads us to our next topic.
As you get ramped up to add your products, you’ll want to make sure you find an ASIN for each item.
First, you’ll want to make sure there isn’t already an ASIN for your products. If you only have a handful, you can manually search the platform for Regular ASINs. These are existing ASINs on Amazon for your products. You can find these manually by going to the “Product Details” block on a product page, or by looking at the sales page URL. Amazon uses the ASIN as the sales page address, and it can be found after the Amazon URL.
If you have a large number of products you need to check for, you can invest in an Amazon ASIN lookup tool to help automate the process.
If you have a brand new product to bring to market, you’ll have to create a new ASIN. This process is equally as straightforward.
Simply add your product from the seller dashboard and Amazon will assign it with a one of a kind ASIN. Do note that down the road, sellers with the same product will use the same code for their products.
As a new seller, an ASIN ensures your products show up in search results, getting you in front of an audience, along with properly tracking inventory and easing the minds of shoppers when they are looking for an exact product.
Using an ASIN also protects your brand from competitors.
Brand owners should consider using Amazon’s brand gating program, which will ultimately restrict other sellers from selling products with your brand or design, protecting your intellectual property.
To participate, you first need approval for your eligible product. This may include submitting necessary trademark or patent information.
As you can see, ASINs are a critical element as you establish yourself as a seller on Amazon. When you take the time to set these up when you first start out, you will be able to sell more efficiently in the long run.
